Baaghen: A Reflection on Migration Crisis in Uttarakhand

On the 24th of November 2024, the Bhaav Rag Taal Natya Academy staged a thought-provoking play titled “Baaghen“, directed by Kailash Kumar ji. The performance took place at 5:00 PM at the London Fort in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand, and it delved into the pressing issue of migration that has become a critical concern in the scenic state of Uttarakhand.

Baaghen” told the poignant story of a retired subedar of the army who resided in a picturesque village nestled in the pahad (mountains) of Uttarakhand. This village, once vibrant with life and community spirit, faced an existential crisis as its inhabitants embarked on a relentless quest for better opportunities. The play highlighted the harsh reality that many villages in Uttarakhand are experiencing—mass migration in search of livelihood and employment opportunities, leaving behind empty homes and fading memories.

As the narrative unfolded, the audience witnessed the struggles of the retired subedar and his family, who grappled with the loneliness and despair that accompanied the exodus of their neighbors.
